Vorwerk "dialog":
A journey across 100 years of carpeting culture
Today Vorwerk is uniting more than a century of carpeting culture with the "dialog art collection". This unique avant-garde collection encompasses design drafts from the Jugendstil era, the Bauhaus age dating back to the 1920s and '30s, as well as contemporary drafts from the '80s and '90s. Working together with Vorwerk, more than forty famous artists and architects of our time have developed the "Contemporary Art: First Edition", "Classic: The Jugendstil Era", "Classic: Women at the Bauhaus" and "Contemporary Art: Flower Edition" collections. With the "dialog art collection", Vorwerk is making a contribution all its own to carpeting culture and displaying how artistic draft designs are converted into up-to-date flooring design. Hardly to be found in any other collection, a fascinating spectrum of design options is being offered for living spaces in the home as well as for prestigious objects in the contract sector. An important factor here is that these are not an elite edition for a small circle of art-lovers: the collections involved are large-scale, industrially manufactured products.

The Collections at a Glance:

Contemporary Art: First Edition (1988)
The inauguration of the "Contemporary Art: First Edition" collection in 1988 led to a decisive change in the way creative textile flooring design is viewed. Renowned artists, architects and designers such as Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Sam Francis, Sir Norman Foster, Michael Graves, Arata Isozaki, Jean Nouvel, Gerhard Richter, Zaha Hadid, Richard Meier, Sol LeWitt, Matteo Thun, Oswald Matthias Ungers and Mimmo Paladino have been active for the "First Edition". Vorwerk has literally brought contemporary art 'down to earth' with the new perspectives in 'flooring reform' initiated by this collection. Time and again, the designs' vividness and their ability to stand on their own demand an intensive, critical examination of textile flooring design as an element of the overall space.

Classic: The Jugendstil Era (1989)
Textile design drafts from the Jugendstil era were rediscovered and transposed onto carpeting for the first time by Vorwerk for the collection "Classic: The Jugendstil Era". Rather than developing copies of historical motifs, the customary practice at the time, designers such as Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Peter Behrens and Henry van de Velde created stand-alone, up-to-date, first-time drafts which found their place in the sample books of the "Wiener Werkstätten" (Viennese applied art in the Jugendstil style). The geometric or ornamental design drafts had been intended for industrial production right from the start, but back then the time had not yet come for effecting them on an industrial scale. The ongoing success of the collection is proof that many of the ideas and design drafts have remained modern and are still a guiding light today.

Classic: Women at the Bauhaus (1994)
The "Classic: Women at the Bauhaus" collection is yet another milestone of the textile avant-garde. The vision displayed by the Bauhaus has had a decisive influence on design and on those designing right up to the present day. Gertrud Arndt, Monica Bella-Broner, Kitty Fischer, Grete Reichart and Gunta Stölzl, the "Women at the Bauhaus", created a large variety of design drafts under the most difficult conditions, drafts which were first put into production by Vorwerk 75 years later as industrial production runs. As regards effecting the drafts, care was taken that only those were selected which had never been converted for series use since the time of their origin in the 1920s and 1930s.

Contemporarty Art: Flower Edition (1998)
The most recent "dialog art collection" is the "Flower Edition". With it, for the first time ever, Vorwerk made a reality of a thematically bound artists' collection developed in association with the theme "Fantasy of Flowers". How that theme was interpreted occurred with complete independence on the part of the artists. Able to be won over for the designing were the talents of the internationally acclaimed artists Klaus Fussman, April Greiman, Kazue Yoshikawa-Miyata, Jeff Koons, Marcello Morandini, Philip Taaffe, Rosemarie Trockel, Robert Wilson and Paul Wunderlich. An unusually creative and aesthetically highly imaginative carpeting collection arose from their design drafts, one whose floral motifs and forms extends from the classic-traditional to the romantically dainty and abstract-expressive, straight through to functional and geometric perspectives.

Vorwerk projection:
Creative and high-quality flooring design for contracts with atmosphere and style

Creating distinctive, "stand-alone" worlds of experience in which architecture and interior design merge to form one entity is becoming more and more of a trend in the demanding contract business. Whether in hotels, office complexes, banks, restaurants or means of transportation; wishes are on the rise everywhere for an aesthetic sense with a high degree of functionality, and both suited to the target group involved. Simultaneously, the need for comfort and security is also growing, a factor evidenced by the revival of the colour and form language of the '50s to the '70s, and by the intensified use of textiles as design element. In the process, textile floor coverings for contracts are also once again being given a higher status, as no other floor covering is able to unite the demand for an aesthetically high-quality and functional design with a comfortable, warm room atmosphere as well as wall-to-wall carpeting.

Vorwerk Teppichwerke in Hamlin, Germany have developed the new Vorwerk "projection Collection" for the demanding small and large-scale contract business. The collection presents an attractive and extensive contract programme containing 23 superior qualities in 410 colour and design schemes. With six woven products and seventeen tufted items, a wide variety of individualised and creative flooring solutions is there for the taking.

New structures and discreet, effective patterns

Of foremost importance in conceiving the new collection was to create a new dimension using structures and discreet, effective patterns. Seven carpets were developed for the very first time for "Vorwerk projection". The remaining products were updated in terms of colours and materials used. Amongst the new carpets are:
Matera: A very finely tufted contract velours with a noble matte aura in twenty-one plain-hued tones suited to contract.
Secco: A trendy, medium coarse loop pile with a sophisticated ribbed structure and exciting high/low effects in nine colours suited for contract, ranging from earthen and natural tones to blue, grey and anthracite. A new special-loop-structure machine was utilised in developing Secco.
Practica: An interesting, effect-creating loop pile with brilliant colourings in thirteen different colours. A new yarn on its own was created towards developing this product.
Marino: A tufted loop pile with a special woven look and a highly textile aura. Discreetly flecked, Marino is being offered in earthen shades and darker nuances of blue.
Menara: As with Marino, Menara is also a bouclé with a highly textile appearance, and is being offered in nine upmarket, plain-hued tones.
Frisea: Due to its high pile weight, an extraordinarily luxurious carpet with a high degree of comfort.
Frisea is being displayed in nine attractive colours.
Last, but not least, Nandou Design: A superior woven product offered in five refined colours for contract. Two additional micro-designs in six striking colours top off the selection. The further development of the classic Nandou carpeting was made possible by employing a new type of weaving machine.

Diverse selection of designs offered

The new "Vorwerk projection" also offers an attractive, innovative selection of designs: Nineteen different designs in seventy-one colourations were developed for the classic Forma Design alone.

The designs range from classic patterns such as dot and checked arrangements in varying sizes and spacings to sophisticated, gridded black/white checks and dot motifs, then on to more generously spaced designs made up of squares that reduce and enlarge themselves or dot shadings in various spacings. With the latter, the impression of flowing, moving surfaces emerges, a task that nearly brought the printing technology to the brink of its capabilities in order to realise the effect. Loosely distributed, playfully arranged dots and checks in varying sizes and colours top off the assortment. One particular highlight is the classic "pinstripe" in a noble black-grey and light grey!

Forma Design in the German Rail's ICE 1 - 3

Vorwerk Teppichwerke has been commissioned to completely refit the German Rail's ICE 1-3 trains with 60,000 square metres of Forma Design. The contract velours Forma has also received a new colour range for "Vorwerk projection": Thirty-one new plain colours can be combined quite well with the possibilities offered by Forma Design.

Bisam Design, a luxurious Saxony, also offers an interesting array of design solutions: a choice of three designs composed of squares, freely-formed checks and ring motifs, each available in three colours. As an appropriate match, the plain-hued Bisam article is being offered in seventeen elegant colour schemes that can be combined with Bisam Design.

Authoritative weaving competency in the new Vorwerk projection

In this new collection, the highly ranked competency held by Vorwerk Teppichwerke becomes apparent through the Nandou / Nandou Design, Mara / Mara Design weaves and the classic Kairo: With these superior-quality carpets, which are continuously being supplemented with new products, Vorwerk Teppichwerke manages time and again to achieve both innovative accents and a sophisticated look in contract products that can stand on their own:

Nandou, a firm and tightly woven bouclé structure that stands up to the most extreme demands, convinces through a puristic, unadorned elegance in a total of sixteen colours suited to the contract field. The eye-catcher is a strikingly bright red!

A further development of the classic Nandou is the new, three-frame Nandou Design in five attractive contract colours. Two additional micro-designs in a two-frame weave and six striking colours top off the selection. Vorwerk offers a very special service for this product: For quantities starting at one hundred square metres, creative customer wishes can be fulfilled individually as if they were a normal production order.

With Mara and Mara Design, two new woven classics have been included in Vorwerk projection. These high-quality loop-pile carpets with a markedly textile look are available in refined, elegant colour schemes and restrained designs.

However, the selection of woven carpets wouldn't be complete without the classic Kairo. Successful for over thirty years, this contract carpet is being presented in three new designs in nine colour schemes. The design concept continues to be characterised by classic patterns. One special highlight is a sophisticated check design with vertical black lines and a horizontal loop in a shimmering metallic look

Attractive collection case

The new Vorwerk projection is being presented in an anthracite-coloured collection case which makes use of attractive interior shots to convey an impression of the effect produced by each of the individual carpets.

All tufted flooring from the Vorwerk projection Collection has been equipped with the fully textile actionbac backing. This absolutely odour-free and easy-to-handle backing enables trouble-free installation. It goes without saying that all carpets bear the TÜV (German Technical Certification Association) seal "suitable for those suffering from allergies", and are inspected regularly for substances harmful to health and the environment.

Individualised special orders

For all tufted products, and starting with a minimum order of four hundred square metres, Vorwerk offers a service whereby they will produce - completely according to individual wish - in any colour or design. For woven products, this attractive offer already applies for orders starting at one hundred square metres (except for Mara). Wovens can be delivered in widths of 200 cm, tufted carpets of the same colour in widths of 200 and 400 cm.

With the newly developed "Vorwerk projection", the Vorwerk Object Collection and the service performance towards fulfilling individualised customer wishes rapidly and tailor-made, as if they were normal production orders, Vorwerk Teppichwerke are in a very good position to continue expanding their successful market position in the highly promising, though demanding, contract business.

Vorwerk premium:
A convincing blend of emotion and sensuality
In times as rapid-paced and hectic as ours, the yearning for oases where one can enjoy some peace and quiet in private is becoming greater and greater. In alignment with that, the interest in aesthetic and harmonious interior design is also on the upswing. Providing oneself with a feeling of comfort and cosiness through an emotional, sensual and harmoniously coloured décor is becoming more and more of a trend in the home. Not surprisingly, a distinctly more important role is once again being given to wall-to-wall carpeting, as no other floor covering provides for that kind of softness and warm cosiness like a carpet. To fulfil that need for an increasing quality of both life and home living on an individualised basis, Vorwerk Teppichwerke from Hamlin, Germany have developed a new Vorwerk "premium Collection" which, as a result of both its emotional aura and its high quality, supplies an abundance of ideas for creative and comfortable flooring design to those with an interest in décor and sophisticated tastes to match.

The new Vorwerk premium is made up of a total of twenty-one very high-quality carpets in nearly four hundred colour schemes. The collection's range extends from classic plain-hued velours to interesting velours varieties and luxurious structured articles straight through to superior weave, loop-pile articles.

With the new selection of eight different types of loop pile alone, the "premium Collection" offers a distinctly broader assortment than all of Vorwerk's collections for the home until now. With its focus on structured carpets, it will also further reinforce the trend towards flooring design that is effective yet unobtrusive at the same time. Amongst the most striking additions are: CASCA, an interesting pearly loop with an extra-fine structure in broadly spaced, flecked shadings; TWEED, a classic loop arrangement, discreetly flecked in nine colours for the home; CABANA, a comfortable structured velours with a matte, earthen aura; TOGA and TOGA MELANGE, two structured loop piles with an innovative cotton look in archetypal natural tones; KOALA, a luxurious Saxony in thirteen brilliant colours, as well as PRISMA, a new, solid and firmly designed weave look with an interesting diagonal structure in nine muted colour combinations.

In developing the colours, a primary consideration for the Vorwerk Design Team was to create colour series which, on the one hand, harmoniously underscore modern styles of décor and, on the other, comply with the desire for contemporary colourfulness. Amongst the plain-hued velours, all by itself the classic MODENA offers sixty-one up-to-date, predominantly bright colours for the home to choose from. The range of colours runs from trendy gold-red and violet shades to a broad spectrum of the blue tones found in water: turquoise and muted shades of green make way for gentle tones in green and lime. The selection of colours offered is topped off by refined shades of grey, straight through to sand tones and nuances of vanilla. "Sophisticated consumers demand a highly differentiated selection of colours, one that has to correspond to today's currents in fashion and a timeless style, too", is the reason Vorwerk designer Erhard Gennrich gives for the large spectrum of colours.

Although, the design concept of the new "premium Collection" is also a convincing factor. Twelve design orientations in fifty-eight colourations offer a special diversity in creative and comfortable flooring design. The dramatically exciting arc ranges from cheerfully pretty dot designs and grid structures all the way to micro-patterns full of variations. The highlights here are graphic patterns, some of which surprise with their three-dimensional look. As a classic for example, circles and squares in a generously spaced arrangement are newly interpreted so that an impression of flowing, moving surfaces reminiscent of the Retro-Look of the '50s and '70s emerges. Avant-garde, trendsetting products like these effectively top off the innovative selection of designs offered by the new Vorwerk "premium Collection".

Equally impressive is the new "Vorwerk premium" collection case, presented in a superior quality bordeaux red and stocked with attractive photos to whisk viewers away to sensual worlds for home living. The emotional mood of the photos keeps to the precedent set by the successful Vorwerk premium advertising campaign and shows young, attractive people relaxing on their floors at home and enjoying themselves. With the aesthetic-emotional styling of their collection case, Vorwerk Teppichwerke is making yet another contribution towards enhancing wall-to-wall carpeting as a product.

All tufted Vorwerk premium carpets have been equipped with the fully textile "texback" backing, meaning that they are odourless, environmentally compatible and particularly long-lasting. Alongside the tufted products, Vorwerk woven carpets have also been awarded the TÜV (German Technical Certification Association) seal "suitable for those suffering from allergies", thereby proving that these days a healthy surroundings and wall-to-wall carpeting are no longer opposing concepts.

Vorwerk Teppichwerke have optimised their service performance even further for the new "premium Collection": All tufted products are available for delivery on a short-term basis in 200, 400 and 500 cm widths, as well as in special-order widths.

At www.vorwerk-carpet.com, carpeting can also be tried out at the web site by installing it virtually in various room situations.
