VORWERK PIECES
Star designers present new, exclusive designs
Hamlin, January 2004 – He is currently receiving triumphal praise for his new staging of the ballet production "Death in Venice" – and now his second premiere follows back-to-back: Internationally renowned star designer Peter Schmidt has designed carpets for the first time, in this case for the exclusive Vorwerk "Pieces" Collection. In designing the fleecy works of art, Peter Schmidt surprises with Far Eastern reminiscences: Japanese kimono motifs, white blossoms on a violet background, as if for one of the Tenno's ladies of the court. An expression of the artist's enthusiasm for Japan. "Designing carpets is a real challenge because here aesthetics combine with the world we live in. The piece must be unique, yet still be usable in its original function", Peter Schmidt says.
Design influences have also flowed into the new, expanded collection through drafts by Coop Himmelblau, a creative "forge" for architectural work in Vienna. Hidden behind the name Coop Himmelblau are Austrian architects Wolf D. Prix and Helmut Swiczinsky, whose impressively unsophisticated designs create an atmosphere laden with tension between the basic interpretation of constructivism and a contemporary "zeitgeist" philosophy.
Vorwerk chief designer Erhard Gennrich, duly regarded as one of those responsible for promoting the styles of German carpet design, has contributed equally with new creations. Round, soft forms and symmetry characterise his designs. Intertwined lines and fine filigree figures are also elements of his particular style.
The new, exclusive designs are going to be presented to the trade for the first time in the course of the Domotex (Hanover) and Heimtextil (Frankfurt/M.) trade fairs.
Whether woven or handtufted, each of the "Pieces" is a true masterpiece with all the merits of customary Vorwerk quality. Every one of them is manufactured individually out of high-quality materials such as New Zealand wool or a blend of hemp and New Zealand wool, and each one fulfils the highest demands on quality.
Following the successful market launch and much positive feedback regarding the "Pieces" Collection, for 2004 Vorwerk is continuing to bank on "authors' designs". Designer greats such as Matteo Thun and Robert Wilson have already delivered designs for the current collection. As of the spring of 2004 the collection is now going to be expanded by the addition of ten new, exciting designs in a total of 34 colour schemes.
