High fashion carpet with Vorwerk and Louise Gray

27. Juli 2012

Seen at the Brioni Palazzo in Milan during Salone del Mobile in collaboration with Brioni, Louise’s work brings a distinctly punk vibe to Home Islands, transforming the highly textured carpet tiles into stunning hand crafted graffiti-esque prints. Using tiles from the Colour Splash in vibrant blues, pinks, reds and orange, Louise has created designs more akin to high fashion textiles than carpet.

“Louise Gray is one of the biggest rising stars in fashion and it is really inspiring to see her creativity and inspired hand crafting come alive on our Home Island carpet tiles,” says Ian Hammond, UK sales director, Vorwerk Carpets. “Unusual in themselves, Home Islands have helped to transcend common perceptions of carpet as rigid and confined and Louise’s additions push conventions to an even more startling extreme. I think we are genuinely ‘wowed’ by what Louise has done.”

Cited as one of London Fashion Week’s brightest talents and recently commissioned by high street fashion powerhouse Topshop, Louise Gray’s collections are a melting pot of bold colours and whimsical prints and this is seen to extraordinary effect upon Vorwerk’s Home Islands carpet tiles. Offering homes a unique and fun way to create flooring that comes to life, Home Islands have made a huge impact in changing attitudes, making carpet fun and engaging.

For the third edition of its Handmade issue, Wallpaper* acted as client, patron and creative director, commissioning some of the world’s most respected designers, artists, craftsmen, brands and manufacturer to create objects, installations, furniture, fashion and food. Vorwerk Carpets joins the likes of Brioni, Gucci, Cole & Son and David Collins.

The full story of how the Handmade project came together, from initial discussions to production, will be told in the August issue of Wallpaper* out July 12
